NORLING BIOGRAPHY

Born in Pasco Washington, September 26, 1894, Ernest Norling started drawing at a young age and never stopped.  He developed his skill to become a distinguished Northwest artist, known for his painting, illustration, and wood carving.

After working briefly in Los Angeles, and New York City Norling settled in Seatlle, working during the lean times of the Great Depression with the W.P.A. Eleanor Roosevelt congratulated him in person when one of his paintings of rain forest loggers was added to the Smithsonian collection.  Some of his murals from that era still exist in public buildings locally.

Both of his sisters became known for their art work as well – Lily Norling Hardwick was a founding member of Women Painters of Washington, known for her portraits of Northwest Native Americans, and Dorothy Gilbert as an illustrator and member of WPW.

One of his artist friends, Eustace Ziegler gave him a set of carving chisels that he put away, and then pulled out later to get a job that he needed, studying and practicing their use to keep the job and then perfecting work in a new medium.  Norling traded and collected artworks from his friends including Ziegler and others, some of which are shown here and also for sale.
